Understanding Mercedes Benz Warning Lights and Messages

Dealer Service Alternative • Apr 05, 2023

When warning lights appear, many car owners ignore them for as long as possible. Whether it’s because a trip to the mechanic tends to be costly or because they simply don’t have time, it isn’t uncommon for car owners to ignore warnings for as long as they can.

It’s never a good idea to ignore Mercedes warning lights and repairs , though, especially when it comes to your car. Those lights appear for your safety, but if you ignore them or don’t understand what they mean, it can become dangerous to use your vehicle.

When it comes to Mercedes Benz, here’s a quick guide to understanding any lights, messages, or warnings your car may try to give you.

Understanding Color Indicators

With Mercedes Benz vehicles, warning messages and lights may appear in one of three colors: red, yellow, or green. You can probably guess what each color means, but here’s a quick overview.

Green warning lights indicate information only. They generally mean you don’t need to panic and take your vehicle to a mechanic, but the information these messages contain could be useful for determining how your car is doing.

Yellow warning lights indicate that something needs to be done. These appear for problems that are arising and should be fixed soon, but you don’t need to pull over immediately and dial an emergency number.

Red warning lights, on the other hand, indicate an immediate issue. If a red warning appears, stop the car as soon as you can and don’t drive it anywhere until the issue has been resolved and the light disappears.

Understanding the Icons and Signs

Some of these icons are pretty self-explanatory while others may need a little more explanation. Depending on what icon appears, you may need to schedule a maintenance check or have new parts ordered. Here are some quick explanations of some icons and signs:

Airbag Indicator Light

This light means there is an issue with the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) in your vehicle. As a result, it is possible that an airbag may not deploy in the event of an accident. Therefore, it is strongly advised that you take your vehicle to a mechanic without delay.

Red Coolant Light

In the event that the red coolant light is illuminated, it is possible that either the temperature gauge is faulty or that the coolant level is insufficient. If the temperature of the coolant rises above 248 degrees Fahrenheit (120 degrees Celsius), it is imperative that you don’t drive the vehicle, as this could result in damage to the engine.

ABS Light

This means that the ABS (Anti-Lock Brake System) has been disabled due to a malfunction. As a result, ESP (Electronic Stability Program), BAS (Brake Assist), EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution), and hill start functions have also been deactivated. Despite these conditions, the brake system itself is still functioning normally. However, be aware that the features mentioned above will not be available.

Battery Warning Light

This light indicates that the battery is not currently being charged. There are a number of possible reasons for this, including a defective alternator, a malfunction in the car’s electronics, or a damaged poly-V-belt.

Which Warnings Are the Most Dangerous?

Any warning that your vehicle gives you should be taken seriously. It’s always better to play it safe, especially when it comes to driving your car, so don’t hesitate to contact our Mercedes mechanic and ask about what you should do regarding a certain light.

No matter what, never ignore a red light. With some lights, you should even avoid driving your car once they appear. Warnings such as a red coolant light, a red oil light, or even a yellow brake wear light should be heeded with exceptional care and caution.
